Hansel and Gretel - Week Two

Hansel, soprano Lauren Curnow (left), and Gretel, soprano Maureen McKay (right), have found themselves lost in the woods.

From left to right, Assistant Conductor Laurie Rogers (seated at the piano) and Maestro Corrado Rovaris run through a music rehearsal with baritone Michael Mayes, as Peter, and soprano Heidi Melton, as Gertrude.

Director Dorothy Danner (left) goes over blocking with baritone Michael Mayes, soprano Lauren Curnow, soprano Maureen McKay, and soprano Heidi Melton.

Soprano Heidi Melton makes her Opera Company debut as Gertrude and baritone Michael Mayes returns as Peter, Hansel and Gretel's mother and father. Mayes made his OCP debut in the 2006 production of Margaret Garner as a Judge and as the cover for Edward Gaines.

From left to right, Gretel (soprano Maureen McKay), Peter (baritone Michael Mayes), Hansel (soprano Lauren Curnow), and Gertrude (soprano Heidi Melton) are happily reunited and give thanks for "heaven's deliverance."

Dancers Kilian Kröll (left) and Elray Belmonti (right), as cats, run through the choreography for their dance during the Witch's ride.

One of the children is nabbed by a mean cat. Another child pulls the cat's tail and the children run to safety.

Director Dorothy Danner goes over staging with some of the children in the production. Here two of them act as angels who come to watch over the sleeping Hansel and Gretel.

Director Dorothy Danner (center) walks through staging with some of the members of the Commonwealth Youthchoirs who will be appearing in Hansel and Gretel.

After Hansel and Gretel shove the Witch into the oven she turns into a giant gingerbread cookie!

Rehearsals aren't all work and no play! Here Assistant Director Seth Hoff takes a moment to don a costume of his own creation and offer a banana to Musical Assistant Lisa Harer de Calvo.
