Curtis Opera Theatre's Production
in association with Opera Company of Philadelphia
& Kimmel Center Presents

In March 2008, one of opera's most talked-about contemporary works makes its Philadelphia Premiere when Osvaldo Golijov's Grammy®-winning opera Ainadamar is produced by the celebrated artists of Curtis Opera Theatre, the training ground of many of today's most acclaimed operatic voices. Given in four performances only in a fully-staged, new production presented by Kimmel Center Presents at the intimate Perelman Theater, Opera Company subscribers have exclusive access to this much-anticipated, limited-availability classical music event.

Ainadamar means "Fountain of Tears" in Arabic and refers to an ancient well near Granada where the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca was assassinated by Fascist Falangist forces in August 1936. Golijov's opera tells the story of Lorca's murder through the memories of the playwright's muse, Catalan actress Margarita Xirgu, and incorporates Arab, Jewish and flamenco idioms in a passionate and melodic masterpiece.
