A look at the elaborate set design by Allen Charles Klein.  Here the headless dummy, one of Turandot’s many victims,
is set in place before the cast arrives onstage to begin rehearsal.  

 

Princess Turandot, soprano Francesca Patanè in her U.S. stage debut, makes her grand entrance and declares that she will marry any suitor who can solve three riddles.   The punishment for an incorrect answer, however, is death!

 

  

Maestro Maurizio Barbacini, principal conductor emeritus, leads soprano Ermonela Jaho, the slave girl Liù, in her aria.  Liù who knows Calaf’s identity but would rather withstand torture than reveal it.
