National Opera Week officially launches with the presentation of the 2009 NEA Opera Honors to Marilyn Horne, John Adams, Frank Corsaro, Lotfi Mansouri and Julius Rudel on November 14th at the Harman Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The Opera Company of Philadelphia is proud to participate in this celebration aimed at raising awareness and accessibility of this inventive, multi-media art form. Philadelphia’s professional opera producer, the Opera Company of Philadelphia recently launched its season with a sold-out run of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly which received audience and critical acclaim. Performing at the Academy of Music and the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater, the Opera Company produces 23 fully staged performances each season, and a wide array of student and adult education programs. Opera Week in Philadelphia launches with a Mayoral Proclamation of the celebration, and features a variety of opera-based activity aimed towards engaging audiences not only at the Opera Company of Philadelphia, but at two of the most prominent international vocal training grounds which are located right here in Philadelphia. Both the Academy of Vocal Arts and Curtis Institute of Music offer fully-staged opera performances during Opera Week. Anchoring the Opera Company of Philadelphia offerings is a free public recital featuring tenor William Burden and baritone Troy Cook on Sunday, November 22nd at 2:30 p.m. at Old Pine Street Presbyterian Church. Burden, who has sung numerous leading roles at the Opera Company of Philadelphia and the most prominent opera houses around the world, most recently performed the role of the Male Chorus in the Opera Company’s sold-out run of The Rape of Lucretia in June 2009. Troy Cook, who just completed an acclaimed performance as Sharpless in OCP’s Madama Butterfly, heads to Royal Opera Covent Garden in December to sing the role of Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, a highlight in his burgeoning international career. Both Cook, who resides in Bucks County, and Burden, a resident of Princeton, are proud to offer their performances in the spirit of National Opera Week for this free-to-the-public recital – which requires reservations. A costume exhibit of some of the Opera Company’s most ornate and beautiful original costumes, designed by Costume Designer Richard St. Clair, will be hosted by Neiman Marcus and King of Prussia Mall Plaza from November 11 – 22. St. Clair has been with the Opera Company for 20 years, and the exhibit shares the fine art behind building couture costumes for the diva. The costumes will be on display in the King of Prussia Plaza, at the Lord & Taylor Court on the Lower Level and in the area in front of Neiman Marcus, also on the Lower Level. Additional costumes are on display in Center City at the popular Shops at Liberty Place during the same time period. Costumes will be on display in the rotunda from November 13th – 20th, with a special lunchtime raffle for tickets on Friday, November 20. The Opera Company’s 2010 single performance tickets will go on sale on Friday, November 13th, with a special 10% off all tickets purchased between November 13th – 22nd by using the code OPERAWEEK at operaphila.org or with Ticket Philadelphia, 215-893-1018.
