09-24-2008

Jun Kaneko is an internationally renowned artist based in Omaha, Nebraska. His artwork appears in numerous international and national, solo and group exhibitions annually, and is included in more than 70 museum collections. He has realized over 30 public art commissions in the United States and Japan and is the recipient of national, state and organization fellowships. Kaneko holds honorary doctorates from the Royal College of Art in London, The University of Nebraska and the Massachusetts College of Art & Design.

Known for his commitment, energy and focus, Kaneko works fluently in diverse media and fields in the arts. In 2003, Opera Omaha commissioned him to design a new production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, which premiered in March of 2006 and was hailed by Opera magazine as “... a mixture of old traditions and modern aesthetic that was visually daring while remaining true to the essence of the music and drama. Kaneko... is celebrated worldwide for his imaginatively ornamented ceramic monoliths....he has a perceptive eye for theatrical and dramatic effect.... a splendidly integrated work of art.”

Hailing from Nagoya, Japan, Kaneko moved to the U.S. in the early 1960s at a time when revolutionary ceramics art was taking center stage. He developed ground breaking methods for glazes, using compelling colors and large scale work. Today, he is at the helm of The Kaneko, a network of studios and galleries occupying 165,000 square feet in Omaha, Nebraska. In 2000, the artist and his wife Ree Kaneko formed a non-profit scholarly organization dedicated to the research and nurturing of creativity in the arts, sciences and humanities.
