Celebrate Jun Kaneko at Locks Gallery:
On Exhibit October 4th Through November 9th
09-24-2008

Jun Kaneko, born in Nagoya, Japan has pursued a dynamic and varied studio practice in painting, sculpture, ceramic and glass since studying in Los Angeles in the 60s. When Kaneko visited Locks Gallery in conjunction with a trip to Philadelphia to work on Fidelio, Owner and Director Sueyun Locks shares, “Jun was inspired by the space and was keen to show his sculpture on the gallery’s roof garden—with the city’s skyline as the backdrop. The artist and I are very excited about this ambitious installation of monumental works.”

Locks Gallery will exhibit ceramic sculpture and works on paper by Kaneko on two floors through November 9th. The gallery’s address is 600 Washington Square South, Philadelphia, 215-629-1000, www.locksgallery.com.

Kaneko employs refined, elaborate glazes with his ceramic work; their expansive surfaces act as canvases for the artist’s geometric abstraction. Working in industrial spaces with beehive kilns in Kansas and Nebraska, he titles his monolithic sculptures on view at Locks, “Dangos” (dumplings in Japanese). Art critic Arthur Danto has described Kaneko’s dangos as “an extraordinary creation, inasmuch as it combines monumentality with warmth and a kind of emotional lightness.”

Concurrently, Kaneko has a sculpture installation on New York’s Park Avenue, organized by the New York City Parks Public Art Program. Kaneko has been an invited artist in residence at Philadelphia’s Fabric Workshop and Museum, and is featured in collections throughout the world including the Museum of Art and Design, NY; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Los Angeles County Art Museum; Arabia Museum, Helsinki, Finland; and the Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama, Japan.

Also on view at Locks Gallery in October are new paintings by the landscape artist Sarah McCoubrey and a provocative exhibit—his first in Philadelphia—by the New York installation artist Rob Wynne. Founded in 1968, Locks Gallery represents an international group of critically respected contemporary artists working in a wide variety of disciplines. The gallery presents new works by mid-career artists like Jennifer Bartlett, Pat Steir, Lynda Benglis and Polly Apfelbaum, while introducing emerging artists to a national audience. Survey and thematic exhibitions of essential artists of the 20th Century are regular highlights, offering an opportunity to view an insightful selection of rarely seen works. The gallery also maintains a vital relationship with Philadelphia artists, bringing their work to the attention of a national audience.

The Opera Company of Philadelphia is proud to partner with the Locks Gallery to bring Jun Kaneko’s work to Philadelphia this fall. We encourage you to learn more about the Locks Gallery and visit Jun Kaneko’s exhibit October 4th through November 9th.
