Composer Tan DunPhotos by Nana Watanabe This February, the Opera Company of Philadelphia brings its third East Coast Premiere in four years: Tan Dun’s Tea: A Mirror of Soul, which combines Asian motifs with Western lyricism to create spectacular landscapes of sound. Winner of both a Grammy and an Oscar for his soundtrack to the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Tan Dun also won this year’s prestigious Grawemeyer Award for classical composition and Musical America's Composer of The Year. His music has been played hroughout the world by the leading orchestras, opera houses, international festivals, and on radio and television, including a commission by the International Olympic Committee to write the Logo Music and Award Ceremony Music for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. In the third of Tan Dun’s four operas, audiences enter into a world where basic elements like water and wind meet the exotic, creating a mesmerizing tale of a noble quest for the ancient Book of Tea. The work, which had its World Premiere in 2002 in Tokyo, made its American Premiere at the Santa Fe Opera Festival in 2007 in a production which received audience and critical acclaim. The Santa Fe Opera creative team, featuring director Amon Miyamoto, scenic designer Rumi Matsui and costume designer Masatomo Ota, brings this breathtaking production to Philadelphia for its much-anticipated East Coast Premiere.
