Opera Week Offerings from Academy of Vocal Arts and Curtis Institute of Music
11-06-2009

As always, the Opera Company’s relationships with the international quality vocal training grounds in Philadelphia are highlighted during National Opera Week. The Opera Company encourages you to attend the Opera Week programming offered by both the Academy of Vocal Arts and the Curtis Institute of Music. The Academy of Vocal Arts presents Verdi’s Falstaff in five performances from November 13th – 23rd, and the Curtis Opera Theatre brings Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress to the stage, in four performances from November 19th – 22nd. Both institutions have scheduled pre-show discussions and educational opportunities with their leading artistic staff.

ACADEMY OF VOCAL ARTS

ACADEMY OF VOCAL ARTS PRESENTS VERDI'S FALSTAFF
The amorous adventures of the rotund knight Sir John Falstaff is the stuff of operatic brilliance in Verdi’s final opera. In need of drinking money, Sir John hatches a plan to seduce two wealthy married women, sending them identical love letters. When they compare the letters, they resolve that Falstaff must be taught a lesson. The comic mayhem that unfolds combines the verbal wit of Shakespeare and the musical genius of Verdi in a comedy that has been popular for over 500 years! Fully staged with orchestra, sung in Italian with English supertitles. Conductor: Christopher Macatsoris; stage director: Tito Capobianco. Performances November 13-23 in Philadelphia, Haverford, and Warrington. Tickets are $48 for adults, $43 seniors, and $28 students, and can be purchased online at www.avaopera.org or by calling 215-735-1685.
