Bryn Mawr Film Institute's Opera Lovers Film Series
12-03-2009

Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra in the 1963 film,
which will be shown in March 2010.

This season the Opera Company of Philadelphia launched a new initiative with the Bryn Mawr Film Institute to offer opera lovers and film lovers a unique way to prepare for our productions and experience opera.

In conjunction with the Opera Company of Philadelphia's 2009-2010 season, the Bryn Mawr Film Institute is screening classic films that have direct thematic or artistic ties to each of the operas we present this season. Mark your calendars for February 10th, when the series continues with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, featuring Tan Dun's Academy and Grammy Award-winning film score. Other films in the series include Elizabeth Taylor's rarely seen Cleopatra (shown in its entirety), Greta Garbo's legendary Camille, and the 1959 Oscar Winner for Best Foreign Film, Black Orpheus.

For two years the Bryn Mawr Film Institute has brought opera to the movie theater by showing performances of some of the greatest operas from the world’s great opera houses. Captured in High Definition, these performances have featured some of the greatest singers in their greatest roles. Since the series began, the Opera Company has provided informative chats to help you prepare for these exciting operas. This season the talks are held one hour before each HD opera screening in BMFI’s multimedia room. Upcoming operas include Bizet's Carmen and Verdi’s Il Trovatore later this month, followed by Mozart's Così fan tutte and Monteverdi's Orfeo in 2010.

Bryn Mawr Film Institute shows the best in independent, documentary, art, and repertory films. Located on Lancaster Avenue in Bryn Mawr, the theater has ample parking and is easily accessible via the Septa R5 Paoli-Doylestown line.
