Community Programs: Engage in Opera! 03-26-2008 Each season, the Opera Company of Philadelphia provides lectures within the community surrounding its productions. One of the most popular is A Taste of Opera, which is presented on a Sunday afternoon before each production’s premiere. Prepare for our spring production, Bellini’s tour de force bel canto masterpiece Norma, at our next presentation of A Taste of Opera on Sunday, March 30th from 2:00 - 4:00 PM. This presentation will feature background information on Bellini’s Druid-themed lyric drama and a recital of bel-canto arias by the wonderfully talented artists from The Curtis Institute of Music and the Academy of Vocal Arts with Opera Company Artistic Coordinator Laurie Rogers at the piano. The event will include wine and light hors d'oeuvres. The Opera Company is excited to announce a new host for this special event: Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Founded in 1805, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts is America's oldest continually operating museum. Nearly every major American artist has taught, studied, or exhibited at the Academy. The institution's world-class collection of American art continues to grow and provides what only a few other art institutions in the world offer: the rare combination of a renowned museum and an extraordinary faculty known for its commitment to students and for the stature and quality of its artistic work. Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, whose galleries feature all American artists, will make a fitting venue as we prepare for our April performances of Norma, which features an all-American cast. As an exclusive benefit for Opera Company patrons, PAFA will open all of its beautiful galleries free of charge! The museum’s knowledgeable docents will also be available to lead complimentary tours of its acclaimed Cecilia Beaux exhibit and the museum’s galleries following the lecture. Reservations are required for this special presentation of A Taste of Opera. Email outreach@operaphila.org or call 215-732-8400, ext 218 to make a reservation or for more information.
