World Premiere of CHARLIE PARKER'S YARDBIRD comes to Philadelphia in June 2015
Tenor Lawrence Brownlee joined Opera Philadelphia Chairman Daniel K. Meyer, M.D. and General Director & President David B. Devan today to announce the first World Premiere commission from the company’s American Repertoire Program. Charlie Parker’s YARDBIRD will receive its World Premiere in June 2015 in the Aurora Series for Chamber Opera at the Perelman Theater, capping Opera Philadelphia’s 40th Anniversary Season, which will also feature the East Coast Premiere of Oscar by Theodore Morrison and John Cox.
The new opera is based on the life of legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker (1920-1955), one of the most influential soloists in the history of jazz and a central figure in the development of bebop. Brownlee will star as Parker in a work written for him by composer Daniel Schnyder, with a libretto by poet and playwright Bridgette A. Wimberly and stage direction by Ron Daniels. Soprano Angela Brown will costar as Charlie’s mother, Addie Parker, with baritone Will Liverman as Dizzy Gillespie. The opera will be conducted by Corrado Rovaris, Opera Philadelphia’s Jack Mulroney Music Director.
Charlie Parker’s YARDBIRD is being developed in partnership with Gotham Chamber Opera. Opera Philadelphia’s full 40th Anniversary Season will be announced on February 18, 2014.
