LEND ME A TENOR

by Ken Ludwig

This night in September of 1934 is the biggest in the history of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company. World famous tenor Tito Merelli is to perform Otello, his greatest role, at the gala season opener. Saunders, the General Manager, hopes this will put Cleveland on the operatic map. Merelli is late; when he finally sweeps in it is too late to rehearse with the company. Through a hilarious series of mishaps, Il Stupendo is given a double dose of tranquilizers which mix with the booze he has consumed and he passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he is dead. What to do? Max is an aspiring singer and Saunders persuades him to get into Merelli's Otello costume and try to fool the audience into thinking he's Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably, but Merelli comes to and gets into his other costume. Now two Otellos are running around in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo! A sensation on Broadway and in London 's West End , Lend Me a Tenor is guaranteed to leave you teary eyed with laughter.

During the Wednesday evenings of Aug. 20, Aug. 27 and Sept. 10, enjoy a menu of opera-inspired cuisine and take part in our search for a top local aspiring opera star.

Part of our continuing dedication to promoting fine arts in the local community, Trattoria San Nicola is hosting three special opera evenings. The competition will feature some of the top aspiring opera singers in the region, and our guests will be the judges of the grand prize winner.

Examples of dishes include Linguini Pavarotti, an original favorite recipe of legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti, and for dessert, an authentic seven-layer Opera Cake. An optional wine flight is available.

The winning opera singer, to be announced during the finale on September 10, will receive a spectacular getaway to New York's historic Mohonk Mountain House. Guests will also have chances to win prizes during the competition.

A portion of the evening's proceeds will be donated to the Opera Company of Philadelphia.

"With Helmet, Shield and Spear?" A talk on WAGNER'S OPERAS
Join us for a fascinating lecture on Richard Wagner's operas.

November 15, 2007 at 5:00 pm
University of Pennsylvania Annenberg Center, Room 110, 3620 Walnut Street
Free and open to public.

Why are modern productions of Wagner so unlike the ones he himself envisaged? Is this vandalism or progress? With the help of many rare illustrations, Patrick Carnegy attempts to make sense of the conundrum. He discusses landmark stagings by Gustav Mahler, Otto Klemperer, Sergei Eisenstein, Wieland Wagner and Patrice Chreau, with side glances at weirdly wonderful film versions of Parsifal by Edison (New York 1903) and Hans Jrgen Syberberg (Munich 1982).

Patrick Carnegy, a graduate of Cambridge University, first visited Bayreuth in 1967 as music critic for the London Times. This inspired his lifelong interest in the stage history of Wagner's operas and the publication of many influential writings. He has been assistant editor of the Times Literary Supplement and music books editor for Faber & Faber. He was the first person to be appointed Dramaturg (literary and production advisor) at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he worked with leading conductors, directors and designers. His book, Wagner and the Art of the Theatre (Yale 2006) has been acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic. In the UK it won a prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award, and in the USA a Special Jury Prize of the George Freedley Memorial Award for its 'outstanding contribution to the history of the theatre'.
