Two composers + Two directors = Four visions of opera in the making
Presented by the Composer in Residence Program of Opera Philadelphia, Music-Theatre Group, and Gotham Chamber Opera
In a unique program on March 21 (Philadelphia) and March 23 (New York City), we presented scenes from new operas being written by Opera Philadelphia Composers in Residence, Lembit Beecher and Missy Mazzoli. In a twist, the four scenes were staged twice, by two different teams of singers and musicians led by stage directors Daniel Fish and Stephanie Havey. Audience members met the composers and shared their thoughts at a post-performance reception. Part of Opera Philadelphia’s Opera from the Lab initiative.
Beecher presented a scene from I Have No Stories to Tell You, with a libretto by Hannah Moscovitch, and a second scene from a yet-to-be-titled chamber opera Beecher and librettist Anisa George are writing about characters coping with Alzheimer’s disease. Mazzoli presented two scenes from a chamber opera she and librettist Royce Vavrek are currently writing, based on the Oscar-nominated 1996 film Breaking the Waves, written and directed by Lars von Trier.
