Hansel and Gretel Opens Tonight!
After nearly 40 years of waiting for a fully-staged, professional production, Philadelphia audiences are treated tonight to the sweet sounds of Hansel and Gretel in its Opera Company of Philadelphia Premiere! This beloved children's fairytale is set to lush and sweeping melodies, and features sets and costumes designed by acclaimed children's author Maurice Sendak, whose beloved, award-winning Where the Wild Things Are is a staple in every children's library.
Starring Lauren Curnow in the "pants" role of Hansel, Maureen McKay as the delightful Gretel, and Jennifer Roderer as the gingerbread-baking Witch, Hansel is rich with unforgettable tunes and the vivid color and texture of the Sendak set. Maestro Corrado Rovaris teams up with director Dorothy Danner to create a production which delights both adults and children alike.

The Press is talking about the Company Premiere of Hansel and Gretel!
"... an opera that has everything.... an unrelentingly beautiful score, tremendous visual possibilities and an alluring story... More than 30 pieces of painted drop scenery are moved in and out... A forest of blues and greens is friendly enough, but teeth-baring creatures look in from the sides...." -The Philadelphia Inquirer, 11/13/07

REMINDER: No Late Seating Policy and Pre-Opera Lectures
As we begin another opera production together, we'd like to remind all ticket holders that the Opera Company of Philadelphia upholds the national standard of "no late seating" once the overture has begun. Latecomers will be seated at the earliest possible break in the performance action, but this may not be until intermission.
Because the Avenue of the Arts has a thriving performance scene with many curtain times coinciding with one another, we ask you to carefully plan your travel, parking and dining to arrive with plenty of time to take your seat before curtain time. Visit our web site for tips on travel planning!
And what better way to ensure you will be on time for the opera -- and to learn about the performance you are about to see -- than to attend one of our Opera Overtures pre-opera lectures. Held one hour prior to curtain and open to subscribers, these 30-minute, casual but informative talks are a great appetizer to the entree of grand opera!
