Powder Her Face
Being a duchess doesn't make her a lady.
Company Premiere and New Production
Only a notorious seductress like Margaret, Duchess of Argyll, could put an entire nation under her spell. Britain’s upper crust was scandalized by her tabloid-perfect, can’t-look-away divorce in 1963. As intimate details of her sexual proclivities and lurid tales of trysts with famous partners became public, she forever earned herself infamy as “The Dirty Duchess.”
Based on real-life exploits, this bawdy social satire has earned its own notoriety with contemporary composer Thomas Adès’s groundbreaking chamber opera. Drawing upon everything from big band and swing to Strauss and Schubert, Powder Her Face is both comic and tragic, eclectic and electrifying. Conducted by Music Director Corrado Rovaris, this new production directed by William Kerley depicts six decades of memories that emerge from various wardrobes and doors of the Duchess’s hotel room until the excesses of her life threaten to swallow her up.
Please be advised that Powder Her Face features adult situations which are inappropriate for young audiences.
