A well-rounded education never sounded so good!
Let your students experience opera – the one genre that brings all the arts together for a magical experience: music, drama, dance, art, and more.
Launched in 1989 in collaboration with the School District of Philadelphia, Opera Philadelphia’s Sounds of Learning programs address the growing gap in arts education and access in the Greater Philadelphia region. Now in its third decade, the program has reached nearly 180,000 students in ten counties through an intensive, in-school, literacy-based music education program that includes opportunities to see a live opera performance.
Additionally, robust after school programs provide students with hands-on opportunities to engage in the art form both on-stage and behind-the-scenes. These programs help foster students’ creativity and self-worth while building a community of arts-engaged young people.

Opera is used as a vehicle to teach lessons across the curriculum. Designed for students in grades 5–12, the program introduces opera through lessons from music and language arts, to social studies, foreign languages, and more. The program culminates with students attending a free dress rehearsal at the Academy of Music.

Grade 4 Residency Program Learn about oneself through Opera
Since 2016, Opera Philadelphia’s in-school programming has grown from single 45-minute presentations to interactive 10-week residencies led by Teaching Artists that focus on using opera-inspired lessons as the vehicle for growth in interpersonal skills, relationship building, and English Language core standards. During the 2020-2021 school year, Opera Philadelphia will continue this work virtually by creating smaller cohorts of students who will work together to choose their own path as a creator, designer, or performer and create and present their own opera company.
