Opera Philadelphia

The Emerging Artists Program

Opera Philadelphia’s Emerging Artists Program returns for a sixth season

The Opera Philadelphia stage has a history as a welcoming environment where rising vocal talents are nurtured. Eric Owens, Stephanie Blythe, and Denyce Graves are just some of the young singers who went on to great operatic careers following early exposure to the professional stage in Philadelphia.

Opera Philadelphia’s Emerging Artists Program continues in 2019-2020 with five new artists —who will engage with Opera Philadelphia in major onstage roles, while also singing in community recitals and special events throughout the 2019-2020 Season.

Mezzo-soprano Kendra Broom is a Curtis Institute of Music graduate who was featured in Opera Philadelphia's Double Exposure in 2018. She will sing the role of Nicoletta in The Love for Three Oranges in Festival O19, and the role of Kate Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly in May 2020.

Tenor Jonathan Johnson is a graduate of the Patrick G. & Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center, the Lyric Opera of Chicago's professional artist-development program. He will sing the role of the Prince in The Love for Three Oranges in Festival O19.

Bass Brent Michael Smith is a resident artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, and previously performed in Opera Philadelphia's 2019 production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. He will sing the role of Chelio in The Love for Three Oranges in Festival O19.

Soprano Tiffany Townsend is a Curtis Institute of Music graduate who performed a leading role in Curtis Opera Theatre and Opera Philadelphia's 2019 co-production of Rene Orth's Empty the House. She will sing the role of Ninetta in The Love for Three Oranges in Festival O19.

Baritone Ethan Vincent is a graduate of the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and was the Second Prize Winner of the 2019 Nicola Martinucci Competition in Lucca, Italy. He will sing the role of the Imperial Commissioner in Madame Butterfly in May 2020.
