Hip H’opera is a collaboration between Art Sanctuary and Opera Philadelphia initiated in 2006.

Students in Art Sanctuary’s North Stars after school arts program wrote spoken word poems that were set to music by classical and jazz composers. The resulting song cycle was performed by opera singers, a string quartet, pianist, and chorus comprised of teens from across the region. Hip H’opera sold out two local performances in February 2007 at Art Sanctuary’s former performing home, the Church of the Advocate, and repeated its sold-out success at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts’ Summer Solstice Program that June.
