The Opera Company of Philadelphia is proud to partner with New York’s Gotham Chamber Opera and Music-Theatre Group in the co-commission and co-production of Dark Sisters, a new American Opera with music by Nico Muhly and a libretto by Stephen Karam.
In a world where personal identity is forbidden, Dark Sisters follows one woman’s quest for self-discovery as she attempts to escape her life as a member of the FLDS Church (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), a polygamous sect based in the Southwestern United States. Dark Sisters puts the women of the patriarchal FLDS sect front and center. The narrative draws inspiration from the flurry of media attention surrounding the two most famous raids on FLDS compounds (the 1953 raid at Short Creek, AZ, and the 2008 raid at the Yearning For Zion Ranch in Eldorado, TX) as well as from the stories of the more than 80 wives of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young.
An incredible ensemble of strong female stars headline the production, led by Caitlin Lynch as Eliza, the conflicted central wife, and starring Jennifer Zetlan, Eve Gigliotti, Margaret Lattimore, and Jennifer Check. Award-winning Broadway director Rebecca Taichman stages this compelling production designed by London’s 59 Productions, with Gotham Music Director Neal Goren conducting.
