Sounds of Learning

Sounds of Learning™ is an arts integration program designed for students in grades 5-12. The program uses an opera's libretto to teach lessons across the curriculum while increasing students' arts appreciation.

Lessons are aligned with Pennsylvania state educational standards and emphasize the cultivation of students' critical thinking and creative writing skills. Program materials can show how each opera's themes relate to correlating social and civic topics today.

Teachers come to Opera Philadelphia's offices for a professional staff development session 4-6 weeks before bringing their students to the final dress rehearsal of an opera at the Academy of Music.

The education program provides lesson plans and student activity books at no cost for each opera. Transportation is provided for 5th-8th grade Philadelphia public school students.
