The Drama of Tosca

Music by Giacomo Puccini
Libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa
Adaption by Francesco Micheli
Sung in Italian with English closed captioning, spoken narration in English

In this concert film, capturing a live performance from May 2021, the tragic tale of Floria Tosca takes on a completely new dimension. Seen through the eyes of an omniscient narrator and focusing on the three main characters, this innovative version of Puccini’s beloved work bridges opera and storytelling, highlighting major themes from the original.

Grammy-winning soprano Ana María Martínez received audience and critical acclaim in her title role debut, with Opera News raving “her rich upper voice and flaming high notes rang out handsomely.” Tenor Brian Jagde is “a robust Cavaradossi” (Philadelphia Inquirer), while baritone Quinn Kelsey is “a Scarpia for the ages” (Parterre Box). The three principals are joined by narrator Charlotte Blake Alston and the Opera Philadelphia Chorus and Orchestra led by Jack Mulroney Music Director Corrado Rovaris.

The piece is a dedication to all who, as Tosca sings in the famous aria “Vissi d’arte,” devote themselves to art, particularly in challenging times.

The Composer

Giacomo Puccini

Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, born on December 22, 1858, started the operatic trend toward realism with his popular works, which are among the most often performed in opera history. But the fame and fortune that came with such successes as La bohèmeMadame Butterfly and Tosca were complicated by an often-troubled personal life. Learn more about Puccini.
