LOVE in the Park
Enjoy the talents of the Opera Philadelphia Chorus in this five-episode series, in which 16 singers under the direction of Chorus Master Elizabeth Braden and accompanied by pianist Grant Loehnig perform beloved opera arias and choruses alongside musical theater selections.
In October 2015, rising soprano Lisette Oropesa made her role debut as Violetta in a new production of Verdi’s La traviata at the Academy of Music, serving notice that this would be one of the definitive roles of her career.
Opera, rock, and film collide in David T. Little's exploration of the life of the Soldier. Based on interviews with veterans of five wars, the piece boldly examines the impact of trauma, the exploitation of innocence, and the difficulty of expressing war's painful truths.
Cycles of My Being
Cycles of My Being, a song cycle that centers on what it means to be a Black man living in America today, had its world premiere on February 20, 2018 in Philadelphia with tenor Lawrence Brownlee and conducted by the composer, Tyshawn Sorey.
The Island We Made
The Island We Made combines ethereal electronic music and the transformative art of drag lip-sync to explore familial relationships and a multi-generational depiction of “Mother.” A haunting lullaby formed from the memories and individual relationships of its collaborators—acclaimed composer Angélica Negrón, drag superstar Sasha Velour, and renowned filmmaker Matthew Placek—The Island We Made is a uniquely intimate art-opera film.
Audio Description at In-Person Performances
Audio Description (AD) is available at select Opera Philadelphia performances. AD is live, verbal narration of the visual elements of theatrical performances. Guests wear a small ear piece equipped with a receiver to hear narration of stage action, actors’ facial expressions, sets, costumes, lighting and props. The person narrating is called the “Audio Describer” and is trained to interject descriptive information between spoken lines. The describer also gives a detailed narration of sets, props, costumes and venue prior to the main performance during pre-show notes.
